Clunky Keys: What to Do if Your Keyboard Stops Working

Keyboard stopped working on your laptop? That is a frustrating all-too-common occurrence.

Lucky for you, there are various steps you can take to figure out why your keyboard is not typing.

Read on!

Figure Out the Cause of the Problem

When your laptop keys are not working, there could be two causes. It could be an issue with the hardware or the software.

Before you try to fix it, it’s best to figure out the source of the problem.

The easiest way to narrow it down is to reboot the computer and enter the UEFI or BIOS.

You can generally get to this screen by pressing Esc or delete as your computer boots up.

Once you are in the BIOS, can you use your keyboard to get around? If you can, chances are the problem is with your software.

If Software, Reinstall Your Keyboard Driver

One of the common causes to a keyboard not typing is a problem with the keyboard driver. This can happen if you install a lot of software or if you don’t turn off your laptop properly.

It’s an easy fix, though! Open the Start menu and type “Device Manager.” Then expand the “Keyboards” section.

Any items here with a yellow exclamation mark is a sign there is a problem. But even if you don’t see an exclamation mark, reinstall your driver anyway.

Right-click your keyboard and choose “Uninstall Driver.” Then reboot your laptop and test your keyboard.

Check the Regional Settings

Sometimes, when keyboard keys are not working, it is due to a regional setting. You might have accidentally set your keyboard to another language or region.

If you are having problems only with certain keys, this is likely the cause. Some keys don’t have a function in certain keyboard settings.

You can test this by opening text editor and pressing the problematic keys. If you can make a stroke but it’s not the right symbol, voila! You’ve found the problem.

Find the Region & Language menu. On Windows 10, you can find it by holding down Windows + I and selecting Time & language.

You will see Region & language. Click add a language and choose the one you need.

If Not Software, Clean the Keyboard

Sometimes a broken keyboard is no more than a dirty keyboard. Dirt and dust can get under your keys and stop them from working.

You can gently pry off one of the keycaps and see how dirty it is underneath. If it’s really bad, that may be the cause of your broken keyboard.

Cleaning your keyboard can fix the problem. One way to do this is by tapping the base.

But first, power off your laptop! Then hold it upside down and gently tap the base. This will dislodge crumbs and dirt.

Don’t be too forceful as that can damage your laptop. You can also use WD-40 to clean out the cracks around your keys.

To prevent this problem in the future, use a keyboard protector.
